Carmen DeVito's passion for horticulture is a natural extension of a childhood spent on a farm in her native Italy and was nurtured while working alongside her parents in their many gardens in the suburbs of New York City.

After completing her undergraduate degree at New York University, she continued her studies at The New York Botanical Garden and The Horticultural Society of New York.

Since 1989, she has held various positions in the field of Horticulture including, Plant Buyer and Store manager for Smith and Hawken, free-lance gardener, interior landscaper and most recently, Plant Hotline and GardenShop manager for The Horticultural Society of New York.

Her gardening clients include, JP Morgan, Time, Inc., CBS as well as numerous residential and commercial clients throughout the New York City area.

As a Principal of Ground Works, Inc., Carmen creates unique gardens and outdoor spaces that reflect the style, personality and needs of each client. As well as sharing her horticultural expertise with her clients, she also lectures widely to garden clubs and horticultural groups throughout the New York metropolitan area.
At age 8, while pouring a box of grass seed onto a blemished circular spot in her suburban lawn of northern Virginia, it was clear to Alice that she needed to take over the family garden. She has an undergraduate degree in Art History and studio art, advanced studies in gardening and garden design from The New York Botanical Garden and has interned with landscape architects and designers throughout New York City.

At The Horticultural Society of New York, Alice directed the GreenBranches program: a city-wide partnership initiative with the NYC Library systems to build gardens at the historic Carnegie branch libraries throughout the five boroughs. As project manager for 13 of these gardens, overseeing their design, installation and maintenance, she recently won the freelance commission for the design of four city capital-funded library gardens. Additionally, the program won an award of excellence from the Mayor’s Council & City of New York Art Commission.

Lecturing and administering to numerous greening and historic preservation groups, Alice has won several design awards and has consulted for many private and public clients: Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, Brooklyn Public Library, The New York Public Library and Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York. Specializing in urban design, her projects include gardens for historic buildings and houses, rooftops, terraces and public community spaces.

As a principal of GroundWorks, Inc. Alice specializes in client satisfaction: a garden that is as unique in style and historicity as is the client and its setting.
